Welcome to The Kashmir Poetics, a not-for-profit, online and print biannual magazine devoted to the art and craft of words and images. We exist as a gathering place for writers, poets, translators, essayists, and visual artists who believe that expression is both a bridge and an archive — a way to hold memory, challenge narratives, and create something enduring.

Our journal was born out of a simple but urgent conviction: Kashmir needs more literary spaces. Voices here are rich, diverse, multilingual, yet too often unheard or misrepresented. By offering a dedicated platform for prose, poetry, translation, and visual art, we aim to nurture those voices and invite the world to listen.

At our heart, The Kashmir Poetics is an act of opening. “Poetics” for us does not mean only verse, though poetry forms a vital strand of our work. It means the whole intricate inner world of creative forms — stories, essays, translations, interviews, images. We seek work that is unafraid of depth, honest in its approach, and alive to both the specific and the universal.

We stand for:

• Diversity of Form: from a short lyric poem to a long-form essay, from an evocative photograph to a vivid translation.

• Linguistic Crossings: our focus is on Kashmiri, Urdu, and English, but we are open to all languages that can be rendered into these.

• Integrity of Voice: whether emerging or established, each contributor deserves careful attention and respectful curation.

• Dialogue and Community: we are not only a publication but a place where readers, writers, and artists can meet and exchange ideas.

We believe art and literature should never be reduced to a single story. By showcasing work that moves between tradition and experiment, personal memory and public history, we help broaden the understanding of Kashmir and its many dimensions.

Our quarterly issues bring together an array of creative and critical work. We organize our content into a few core streams:

• Poetry: Original poems in Kashmiri, Urdu, and English. We welcome traditional forms alongside contemporary experiments, translations, and hybrid pieces.

• Prose: Short fiction, flash fiction, and creative nonfiction. Stories that surprise, illuminate, and linger.

• Essays: Literary criticism, memoir, travel writing, book reviews. We value essays that examine texts, lives, and places with nuance.

• Translation: An act of creation in its own right. We accept translations between our three focal languages, and from other languages into these.

• Interviews: In-depth conversations with artists and writers, conducted and transcribed by the interviewer, offering readers a glimpse into the creative process.

• Visual Art: Photography, painting, mixed media. We see images not just as illustration but as parallel narratives in their own right.

This breadth allows contributors to cross genres and readers to discover unexpected connections between forms.

We describe ourselves as “a much-needed literary space for Kashmiri writers and artists” That line on our homepage is more than a tagline; it is our mission.

Kashmir is layered — geographically, culturally, historically, emotionally. Its literature mirrors that layering. Yet global perceptions often flatten the region to conflict alone. By publishing diverse creative work, we aim to reflect not only struggle but also joy, resilience, imagination, and everyday life.

We are here to:

• Amplify Kashmiri voices in their own languages and in translation.

• Encourage younger and emerging writers to develop their craft.

• Offer a platform where local and diasporic perspectives can meet.

• Build an archive for the future — a record of artistic and literary thought from this time.

In doing so, we resist the idea that Kashmiri art must fit a single frame. We hope our readers find in our pages a truer, more textured sense of place and people.

 We publish two issues a year, each aligned with seasons. Our calls for submissions open in advance of each issue — for example, Spring-Summer  submissions begin in Winter.

We encourage:

• Writers to send polished, original work in the categories above.

• Translators to propose pieces that bring hidden or historic voices to new readers.

• Visual artists to share images, films, audio that complement their work.

We consider both established and emerging voices. If your work is sincere, thoughtful, and crafted with care, we want to read it. Our editors review every submission with respect and attention.

The word “poetics” signals our belief that the creative impulse cannot be confined to one genre. To think of poetics is to engage with the intricacies and inner worlds of all forms. In Kashmir — a region where multiple languages, traditions, and histories coexist — poetics also suggests an ethic: to listen, to translate, to bear witness, and to shape meaning from complexity.

We do not limit ourselves to any one school or style. A poem may converse with a photograph; a memoir may echo a folktale; a translation may reveal the life of a text centuries old. Each piece enters into a dialogue with others, forming a mosaic rather than a monolith.

Beyond our pages, we envision The Kashmir Poetics as a meeting place. Contributors collaborate with fellow artists, showcase projects, and build networks that may lead to readings, workshops, or new works.
